IAN DIDN’T have any idea what to pack for a picnic, so he did what any self-respecting man would do: he lounged casually in the doorway to the kitchen where Hortensia was cleaning up after breakfast and gave her his most charming smile.

Ian had spent more than a few mornings hanging out in the sunny kitchen while Hortensia banged and clanked around. He knew she hadn’t liked him much during his first few visits, but they’d actually had some good conversations and gotten to know each other since he’d come to stay with Niall and Ethan. It probably helped that he hadn’t shown up at breakfast lately still buzzed from the night before, like he had on previous trips. She’d been genuinely happy to help him plan Niall and Ethan’s wedding, and things had been a lot easier and more casual between them because of it. It wasn’t totally out of the realm of possibility he’d drop by just to see her, but he could tell she wasn’t buying it from the distinctly unimpressed expression on her face.

“Niall told me about your date. He was very impressed you were making lunch for your gentleman. He said it was a sign of how serious you were about him, and you’d turned over a new leaf.” She raised an eyebrow at him. “I’m making chicken sandwiches for you. You’re lucky. I have a few slices of that chocolate cake you like so much left.”

Ian grinned sheepishly and ran a hand over the back of his neck. He’d been planning to beg her to help him, but he should have known Niall would have gossiped all about his date to her already.

“I don’t suppose you know Luke, do you?” It was a long shot, but if Niall knew him, it was possible Hortensia did too.

“I do not. Though Niall showed me the picture you took of him.” She pursed her lips and shook her head. “You need to be more respectful.”

He sincerely hoped his mother never met Hortensia because they were eerily similar. Together, they’d be a force of nature. If they teamed up on him, he’d probably be married with a picket fence and a Labrador retriever in no time.

“It was a joke,” he muttered, chastised.

“You need better jokes,” she said sternly but ushered him into the kitchen anyway. He couldn’t be in that much trouble if she was letting him have his customary spot at the breakfast bar. He’d been banned from the kitchen for a lot less than a distasteful photo.

Everything Hortensia made was excellent, but it looked like she was really outdoing herself for the picnic spread. Chicken sandwiches sounded simple, but they actually seemed to be some sort of complicated wrap. There was also a bowl of her homemade potato salad and a container half-full of sliced strawberries. She picked up her knife and used it to wave Ian over toward the coffee maker before she resumed slicing.

“Get yourself some coffee and talk to me about this man. Niall said he has you tied up in knots.
